Private AI Home Assistant and Smart Home Setup in Minneapolis–St. Paul

Kotoh Home sets up a private AI home assistant for Twin Cities homes remotely, with the heating, freeze and snow alerts that the coldest major metro in the country calls for.

Built for the coldest big metro in the U.S.

The Twin Cities has the coldest average temperature of any major metropolitan area in the country. The record low is −41°F, set in 1888. Snow averages about 45 inches a year, with around 100 days of at least an inch on the ground, and big storms can deliver a lot at once: the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 dropped 28.4 inches at the airport. Summer brings its own risk, with severe thunderstorms that can produce damaging straight-line winds and large hail.

In a climate like this, the most expensive problems are slow ones: a furnace that quits overnight, a pipe in an outside wall, an ice dam pushing water into a ceiling. The goal is to hear about them in minutes, not days.

What the assistant keeps an eye on

  • Heating that can't keep up. Sensors in each zone and a smart thermostat let the assistant spot a house losing heat and text you with the numbers.
  • Pipe-freeze risk. Sensors along exterior walls, in the basement and near the water main warn you as a spot gets cold, with a second alert if it keeps dropping.
  • Water where it shouldn't be. Leak sensors under sinks, by the water heater and in the basement catch a burst pipe or ice-dam drip early.
  • Lake place or cabin. If you have a second home up north, the same assistant can watch both. See second-home monitoring.
  • Daily life. "Warm up the house before we get back from the cabin" and the family calendar, by text.

What a cold snap looks like with it running

When a deep cold spell is forecast, you can text "cold snap" and the assistant confirms the heat set points, checks every room sensor and tells you which spot in the house is coldest right now, often a mudroom, a bathroom on an outside wall or the space near the water main. If one of those drops past the threshold you set, you get a message with the reading, not a vague warning. If the furnace stops keeping up, it texts again with how fast the house is cooling, so you know how urgent the service call is.

Summer is covered too. The same basement sensors catch water after a heavy thunderstorm, and the assistant can relay National Weather Service warnings and remind you to close windows or bring the car in before hail. It won't fix an ice dam or replace a furnace tune-up. It makes sure you hear about trouble while it's still small.

Remote setup in Minneapolis and St. Paul

We start with a free video walk-through and a fixed price. Then we ship a hub configured for your home; you plug it into your router, and we finish over video: connecting calendars, email and your compatible devices, setting up texting for each person and building your routines. New devices that need wiring or plumbing, like an automatic water shutoff valve, can be installed by your own tradespeople to our spec, or as a travel install we quote.

Pick where the AI runs

Private Cloud starts at $4,995. The hub runs your house locally, and the AI runs on an open-source model on a private server we operate in a U.S. data center, with no conversation logs. Private Home starts at $24,995 and puts a dedicated AI computer in your house, with battery backup, so the assistant keeps working through an internet outage. Ongoing care plans keep it updated. For a sensor plan, read our freeze, leak and power alerts guide.

Common questions

Can it tell me if my furnace stops in January?

Yes. Room temperature sensors and a smart thermostat show when the house stops holding its temperature, and the assistant texts you right away, with the readings, so you can call for service before pipes are at risk.

Will it work if the internet goes down during a blizzard?

Your home's rules keep running on the hub in the house. With Private Cloud, chatting with the assistant pauses until the connection is back; an optional cellular backup keeps alerts reaching you. Private Home keeps the assistant working offline.

Do you install in the Twin Cities?

Private Cloud is set up remotely: we ship a pre-configured hub and finish setup with you over video. Private Home and devices you want us to install are quoted as a travel install.

What does it cost?

Private Cloud starts at $4,995 plus a $199-a-month care plan that includes your private AI server. Private Home starts at $24,995 plus travel, with care at $399 a month.
