Best Smart Lock for Privacy and Local Control (2026): Matter, Z-Wave and Home Assistant Picks

The best smart lock for a private home is one that works locally, so it locks, unlocks and manages codes without a company's servers. Our top pick is the Schlage Encode Plus over Matter and Thread; for Z-Wave homes, the Schlage Connect. Both connect locally to Home Assistant.

In short

For privacy and reliability, choose a smart lock that works locally. Our top pick is the Schlage Encode Plus, which is Matter-certified over Thread and supports Apple Home Key, from $329. For Z-Wave homes, the Schlage Connect starts at $241. Both connect to Home Assistant locally. Wi-Fi-only locks usually depend on the maker's cloud.

Our picks at a glance

These are our picks based on published specs, Home Assistant integration data and the makers' own documentation, checked in October 2026. We haven't run lab tests, and Kotoh Home takes no commissions from any lock brand.

Why local control matters most for locks

A lock is the one smart device where a delay or an outage is more than an annoyance. If your lock depends on the maker's cloud, three things can go wrong: the internet at the house drops, the company's servers have a problem, or the company changes or ends the service. Any of those can stop remote unlocking and automations.

A lock that works locally talks to a hub in your house over Matter, Thread or Z-Wave. Home Assistant sees it lock and unlock instantly, can change codes, and keeps doing both with the internet down. The keypad and key always work on the lock itself.

How to read Home Assistant's labels

Home Assistant labels every integration by how it talks to the device. The Schlage Wi-Fi integration is "Cloud Polling": it connects "through Schlage's cloud API" and checks in periodically. The Yale Home integration is "Cloud Push" and needs a Yale Connect bridge or doorbell. Matter and Z-Wave are local. For locks, local is what you want.

Best overall: Schlage Encode Plus

The Encode Plus is Schlage's flagship keypad deadbolt. Schlage lists it as Matter-certified and working with Thread, with built-in Wi-Fi, and it supports Apple Home Key, so you can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock. Schlage describes its BHMA rating for security, durability and finish as best-in-class. It starts at $329 at Schlage.

For a private home, the important part is Matter over Thread. Paired to Home Assistant through Matter, the lock is controlled locally, without going through Schlage's cloud. You'll need a Thread border router: a Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 set to Thread, or an Apple TV, HomePod or Google Nest hub. Schlage lists a home hub as required for its Apple Home features.

One lock, several apps

Matter allows "multi-fabric" control: Home Assistant's documentation explains that a Matter device can join several controllers at once, such as Home Assistant and Apple Home. That means family members can keep using Apple Home and Home Key while Home Assistant runs the automations and manages codes.

Best for Z-Wave homes: Schlage Connect

The Schlage Connect is a Z-Wave Plus deadbolt designed to join a home automation or security system. It starts at $241. Z-Wave runs on its own radio band, away from crowded Wi-Fi, and Home Assistant's Z-Wave integration is local, with actions to set and clear lock user codes.

It's a strong choice if the house already has Z-Wave devices or will use Z-Wave for leak sensors and water valves. Home Assistant's Connect ZWA-2 adds Z-Wave to the hub for $69. Our guide to Zigbee vs Z-Wave vs Thread covers the trade-offs.

If the house has a detached garage, pool house or gate, Z-Wave Long Range is worth knowing about. The Z-Wave Alliance says it allows much higher transmit power than standard Z-Wave, supports large networks and stays backward compatible. That's useful where a lock sits far from the hub.

Worth considering: Aqara Smart Lock U200

Aqara's U200 lists Thread, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC on its spec sheet. It takes a rechargeable 7.4-volt battery or four AA batteries, and its keypad can be battery or hardwired. Home Assistant's documentation warns that Thread devices don't necessarily support Matter, and advises looking for the Matter logo itself. Confirm Matter support for the exact version before you buy one for a Home Assistant home.

Matter vs Z-Wave vs Wi-Fi locks

The radio inside a lock decides how it reaches your hub, how long the batteries last and whether it keeps working when the internet doesn't. Here's how the three common options compare for a private home.

Which to choose

For most new installs we lean toward Matter over Thread, because it works across Home Assistant, Apple Home and Google Home at the same time. Z-Wave remains a strong, mature choice, especially in larger houses, where Z-Wave Long Range helps reach far doors, gates and outbuildings. Wi-Fi-only locks make sense mainly when there's no hub at all.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does the lock fit my door: thickness, backset, and deadbolt or mortise?
  • Which version am I buying? Some models come in Wi-Fi, Matter and Z-Wave variants that look identical.
  • Where will the hub or border router sit, and is it close enough to the door?
  • How will guests and staff get codes, and who can change them?
  • What happens if the battery dies while we're away?

What to look for in any smart lock

  • A local connection: Matter over Thread, or Z-Wave. Treat Wi-Fi-only locks as cloud locks unless the maker documents local control.
  • A real deadbolt: check the BHMA rating, and that it fits your door's thickness and backset.
  • A backup way in: a physical key, or emergency power contacts for a dead battery.
  • Code management: per-person codes you can schedule and revoke from your hub.
  • Auto-lock: locks itself after a set time, on the lock, not in the cloud.
  • Battery alerts: reported to Home Assistant, so a low battery becomes a reminder, not a lockout.

Making a lock smarter with Home Assistant

A local lock becomes much more useful once your hub manages it:

  • Scheduled codes: the cleaner's code works only on cleaning days; the dog walker's only at midday.
  • Arrival and departure: lock everything when the last person leaves, and alert if a door is unlocked at bedtime.
  • Doorbell plus lock: see who's at the door on your local doorbell and let them in from the same screen.
  • Logs: a record of which code opened which door, and when.
  • Second homes: give a caretaker or house manager their own code and alerts. Our guide on smart homes for house managers shows how.

Locks to approach with care

Cloud locks aren't unsafe, but they make you depend on someone else. Before buying any Wi-Fi-only lock, check whether Home Assistant's integration for it is "Cloud Polling" or "Cloud Push," and whether the maker offers a Matter or Z-Wave version. Some brands, Schlage included, sell local versions alongside their Wi-Fi models. For background on how Matter makes that possible, see Matter explained.

Installation notes

On a standard door, swapping an existing deadbolt for a smart one is usually a short job. Older doors, unusual thicknesses, mortise locks and multipoint locks on French doors often need adapters or a different lock entirely. Check before you buy, or have the installer measure during the walk-through.

Common questions

What is the most secure smart lock?

Look first at the physical lock: Schlage says the Encode Plus carries a strong BHMA rating for security, durability and finish. Then look at how it connects. Locks that work locally over Matter, Thread or Z-Wave with modern encryption avoid depending on a company's cloud account to open your door.

Do smart locks work without Wi-Fi or internet?

The keypad, key and auto-lock work on the lock itself. Remote control and automations depend on how the lock connects. Matter-over-Thread and Z-Wave locks talk to a hub in your house, so they keep working with Home Assistant when the internet is down. Wi-Fi locks that use the maker's cloud lose remote control during an outage.

Can I manage door codes from Home Assistant?

Yes. Home Assistant's Z-Wave integration has actions to set and clear lock user codes, and its Matter integration can add and remove lock credentials such as PINs. That's how you give a cleaner a code that works only on Tuesdays, or remove a contractor's code when the job ends.

Do I need a hub for a Matter smart lock?

Matter locks that use Thread need a Thread border router. That can be a Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 set to Thread, or an Apple TV, HomePod or Google Nest hub. Schlage lists a home hub as required for the Encode Plus's Apple features.

Is a Wi-Fi smart lock bad?

Not bad, but usually cloud-dependent. Home Assistant's Schlage Wi-Fi integration, for example, connects through Schlage's cloud API and checks it periodically. That works, but local Matter or Z-Wave control is faster and keeps working without the internet.
