Private AI Home Assistant Setup in Portland, Oregon

Kotoh Home sets up private AI home assistants for Portland homes remotely, with routines for the ice storms and record heat that have tested the city in recent years.

A mild climate with sharp exceptions

Portland weather is usually easy, which is part of why its extremes catch people off guard. In February 2021, a mix of snow and ice brought 9.4 inches of snow to Portland International Airport over two days, the most since 1968. Over 270,000 people in the region lost power, with 401 miles of power lines to restore, in what became the largest power outage in Oregon history. Four people in Oregon died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Four months later came the opposite. On June 28, 2021, Portland hit 116°F, its all-time record, after highs of 108°F and 112°F the two days before. Oregon recorded at least 116 heat deaths that week, 72 of them in Multnomah County. Many Portland homes were built for mild summers, without central air.

What we set up for a Portland home

  • Outage awareness. A battery backup for the hub and router, and a text when power drops and returns, with the indoor temperature and anything that tripped while it was out.
  • Heat-wave routines. Fans and window units on a schedule, shades closed on the west side in the afternoon, and alerts when a bedroom or a relative's room passes a temperature you set.
  • Water protection. Leak sensors where water heaters, washers and older plumbing live, plus an automatic shutoff valve for the main.
  • Everyday help. Family calendars, reminders, an inbox summary and lights and locks by text, from the messaging app you already use.

How remote setup works

We set up Private Cloud for Portland homes remotely. A free video walk-through comes first, so we can see your layout, router and existing devices. We then configure the hub with your rooms, people and routines and ship it to you. You plug it in, and we finish the setup together on a video call, connecting your accounts and compatible devices.

For new hardware, like a shutoff valve, smart switches or sensors, we give you a specific parts list and placement plan for your own electrician or plumber to follow, or quote a travel install. Private Home, with a dedicated AI computer in your house, is always installed in person on a travel install.

Privacy without the big platforms

Private Cloud uses an open-source AI model on a private server we operate for you in a U.S. data center, never OpenAI, Google or Amazon, and we keep no conversation logs. Private Home runs entirely inside your house. With both, the hub that runs your devices and rules is local, so a lost internet connection doesn't stop the house from working. Our local vs cloud guide explains the difference.

Older homes, newer systems

Portland has a lot of older houses, from bungalows to Craftsman homes, and many have been updated in stages. That usually means a mix of devices from different eras: a smart thermostat here, an older alarm there, maybe a heat pump added in recent years. Part of the walk-through is sorting out what can join the hub and what can't, and being honest about it. Devices that only work through a manufacturer's cloud may stop working if that service changes, so we favor equipment that runs locally. We'll also check where your router sits, because thick plaster walls can weaken Wi-Fi, and we'll suggest a mesh access point if a basement or upstairs bedroom is out of range.

Common questions

Does it still work during an ice storm outage?

If the power is out, nothing electrical works without backup. With a small battery backup on the hub and router, the hub keeps running and battery-powered sensors keep reporting. When power returns, the assistant texts you a summary, and an optional cellular backup can keep alerts flowing in the meantime.

Many Portland homes don't have central air. Can it still help in a heat wave?

Yes. It can run fans, close smart shades on the sunny side, and alert you when a room passes a temperature you choose, which matters for older relatives and pets.

Do you have a team in Portland?

No. We set up Private Cloud remotely: we ship you a pre-configured hub, you plug it into your router, and we connect your accounts and compatible devices with you over a video call. Private Home and Estate projects in Portland are travel installs, where we fly in for install day.
