Private AI Home Assistant Setup in Raleigh

Kotoh Home sets up private AI home assistants for Raleigh homes remotely, with routines built for the City of Oaks: big trees, the storms that bring them down, and the occasional real snowstorm.

The City of Oaks and its storms

Raleigh is known as the City of Oaks for its oak-lined streets, and those trees are part of how storms play out here. In 1996, Hurricane Fran brought unexpected high-wind damage along the I-40 corridor up through Raleigh, damaging historic buildings and trees across the Triangle. In Raleigh, a teenager drowned when Crabtree Creek flooded at Old Lassiter Mill.

Winter can surprise the city too. The January 2000 storm left 20.3 inches of snow at Raleigh–Durham International Airport, with 20 to 24 inches around Raleigh. In a region that rarely sees that much snow, outages and frozen pipes follow quickly.

Raleigh, the seat of Wake County, had 467,665 residents at the 2020 census and covers about 149 square miles, much of it neighborhoods of single-family homes under mature trees. That mix of large lots, overhead power lines and big oaks is why outage planning comes first in our Raleigh setups.

What we set up for a Raleigh home

  • Storm and outage awareness. Battery backup for the hub and router, a text when power drops and returns, and a check-in on doors, windows and leaks after a storm passes.
  • Freeze protection. Temperature sensors near pipes in crawl spaces, garages and exterior walls, with an alert as they approach freezing.
  • Water protection. Leak sensors where water heaters and washers live, and an automatic shutoff valve that closes the main when a leak is found, run locally by the hub.
  • Household routines. Calendars for the whole family, reminders, an inbox summary and lights and locks by text.

Remote setup across the Triangle

We set up Private Cloud for Raleigh homes remotely. After a free video walk-through, we configure your hub with your rooms, family profiles and routines and ship it to you. You plug it into your router, and we spend a video call connecting your accounts and the compatible devices you already have.

New equipment, such as crawl-space sensors, a shutoff valve or smart switches, comes with a parts list and placement plan for your own plumber or electrician, or as a quoted travel install. Private Home, with a dedicated AI computer in your house, is a travel install.

Your AI, not a big platform's

Private Cloud runs an open-source AI model on a private server we operate for you in a U.S. data center, with no conversation logs and nothing sent to OpenAI, Google or Amazon. Private Home keeps everything inside your house and works fully offline. Either way, your lights, locks and sensors run on a local hub. Read more in our guide to freeze, leak and power alerts.

What we'll ask on your walk-through

Many Triangle homes have crawl spaces, and that's where pipes are most likely to freeze, so we'll ask about access, insulation and where the water main is. We'll ask whether big trees overhang the roof or the power line to the house, which tells us how much to plan for outages, and whether you have a generator. We'll check your router and Wi-Fi coverage, then move on to the household side: which calendars to connect, who gets which alerts, and what you'd like summarized each morning. After the call, you'll get a written plan with what we'll connect remotely, anything worth adding, and a fixed price.

Yes. Remote setup works anywhere in the Triangle, and Private Home or Estate projects are travel installs wherever the house is.

What does it do when a big snowstorm hits?

No. We set up Private Cloud remotely: we ship you a pre-configured hub, you plug it into your router, and we connect your accounts and compatible devices with you over a video call. Private Home and Estate projects in Raleigh are travel installs, where we fly in for install day.
