Private AI Home Assistant and Smart Home Setup in San Diego

Kotoh Home sets up a private AI home assistant for San Diego homes remotely, with routines for Santa Ana wind days, planned power shutoffs and wildfire season.

San Diego's risk comes with the wind

San Diego's chaparral and coastal sage scrub burn easily, and fires have grown more common as homes have spread to the edge of wild land. The Cedar Fire in October 2003 burned 280,000 acres, killed 15 people and destroyed more than 2,200 homes. To reduce the chance that power lines start a fire, utilities now cut power ahead of dangerous dry, windy days. In 2019, San Diego Gas & Electric shut off power to about 400 customers in eastern San Diego County during the fall's first Santa Ana wind event, and later in October cut power to 19,000 households because of high winds, heat and dry conditions.

So the practical questions for a San Diego house are: what happens when the power is cut on purpose, how fast do you hear about smoke or heat, and who checks the house if you're away?

What the assistant handles

  • Shutoff days. When power drops, the assistant notes the time, keeps local rules running on battery and texts you through an optional cellular backup. When power returns, you get a summary: indoor temperatures, freezer, doors and any alerts.
  • Smoke days. One text can close smart shades and windows, set the HVAC to recirculate where supported and turn on purifiers.
  • Away from home. Daily check-ins or silence-until-something-changes, your choice, plus limited access for a neighbor or house sitter.
  • Everyday life. Calendars, reminders, pool and garden schedules, and "turn on the AC an hour before we land" by text.

Preparing for fire season

A few things are worth doing before Santa Ana season starts. Put the hub, router and modem on a battery backup so they ride out short shutoffs. Decide what "shutoff mode" means for your house: which devices go off, which stay on battery, which family members get notified. If you have a standby generator with a monitoring option, we can include its status. And keep your emergency plan separate: the assistant is a helper, not a replacement for official alerts and evacuation orders.

What it doesn't do

To be clear about limits: the assistant doesn't predict fires, can't keep your power on during a shutoff, and isn't a substitute for official alerts or an evacuation plan. Its job is to keep your house's own systems working together, tell you plainly what changed, and make the routine tasks one text instead of ten taps. Everything it does, you can see and change.

Remote setup in San Diego

It starts with a free video walk-through and a fixed price. We ship a hub configured for your home; you plug it into your router, and on a video call we connect your accounts and compatible devices, set up texting for each person and build your routines. Smart devices go on their own network, as described in our network and security service. New wired devices can be installed by your own electrician to our spec, or as a travel install we quote.

Which option fits

Private Cloud, from $4,995, runs the house on the local hub and the AI on an open-source model on a private server we operate in a U.S. data center, with no conversation logs. During an internet outage the chat pauses, but your home's rules don't. Private Home, from $24,995, adds a dedicated AI computer in your house, so the assistant keeps answering offline, which is useful in areas with frequent shutoffs. Our local vs cloud guide explains the difference, and second-home monitoring covers places you visit only sometimes.

Common questions

What happens during a planned power shutoff?

With a battery backup on the hub and router, local rules and alerts keep running through a short outage, and an optional cellular backup keeps texts reaching you. The assistant can tell you when power went out and came back, and how the house held up.

Can it help with wildfire smoke?

It can close smart windows or shades, switch your HVAC to recirculate where your system supports it, and turn on air purifiers on smart plugs, all from one text. It doesn't replace official evacuation alerts, which you should always follow.

Do you install in San Diego?

Private Cloud is set up remotely: we ship a pre-configured hub and finish setup with you over video. Private Home and any devices you want us to install are quoted as a travel install.

What does it cost?

Private Cloud starts at $4,995 plus a $199-a-month care plan that includes your private AI server. Private Home starts at $24,995 plus travel, with care at $399 a month.
